Weight loss equipment?

I have put on A LOT of weight the last year and I hate going to the gym as it is full of pervs who just literally stand behind or next to my machine and watch me! Ok so I have a treadmill at home and am considering buying an Cross Trainer along with a Rower or Stepper, would these be sufficient enough? Along with also doing toning exercises at home. My brother said they are all gimmicks and the cross trainer would be enough. Oh also a change of diet too
