Does a 3.1 V-6 Engine cause problems?

Someone is interested in selling me a 1998 Buick Century, with only 40,000 miles on it. My dad doesn't want me to get it because it has a 3.1 Engine and apparently they cause problems. I don't think he really knows what his own logic is behind this, and is basing it off a few people he knew who had problems. Is a 3.1 V-6 bad, or should I or shouldn't I get the car? Please Help Me, Thanks.
